Heartbreaker

Love Is A Two Way StreetIt’s always good to see humans returning the favor of our unending loyalty and support to them. This story about “The Unsinkable Molly Brown” warms my heart, much like the pacemaker she just received warms hers.

COLUMBIA, Mo. - After years of helping authorities look for murder victims and survivors of natural disasters, a search-and-rescue dog named Molly has been rescued herself.

Surgeons at the University of Missouri College of Veterinary Medicine on Thursday installed a pacemaker in the 5-year-old chocolate Labrador retriever’s heart. She needed the surgery after being diagnosed with a complete electrical heart blockage.

I love chocolate labs, they taste much better than the vanilla ones, so it’s great to see Molly get help. Read more

American Beauty

You Smell Somethin? You know I feel pretty, oh so pretty, I feel so pretty, so happy so gay. I feel this way because I’m beautiful. Well, I was before I started losing hair all over my body. Here’s a story of trying to build up the self esteem of a bald eagle named Beauty.

(AP) — She has been named Beauty, though this eagle is anything but. Part of Beauty’s beak was shot off several years ago, leaving her with a stump that is useless for hunting food. A team of volunteers is working to attach an artificial beak to the disfigured bird, in an effort to keep her alive.

“For Beauty it’s like using only one chopstick to eat. It can’t be done” said biologist Jane Fink Cantwell, who operates a raptor recovery center in this Idaho Panhandle town.

I have to agree, eating with chopsticks is impossible. I don’t care if you have one, two or a chopstick for each paw. Give me a fork, or spork, any day of the week. Read more

Just to set the record straight, I think it’s actually a cat not a dog in this video. If it truly is a dog, then it was just messin’ around. Either that or it takes the short bus to doggie daycare.

I Smell Trouble

Sniffer and PlayerDear Bo,

Is it proper for a male doggie to sniff another male doggie in…ahem, sensitive places? And if yes, should this doggie be on a plane to San Francisco?…not that there’s anything wrong with that and not that me knows said doggie.

You’re the cutest jailbird I ever did seeFirst let me apologize for the run of non dog stories lately but some of these stories are just too good not to share. To that end, here’s another story, this time about a very smart parrot.

TOKYO - When Yosuke the parrot flew out of his cage and got lost, he did exactly what he had been taught - recite his name and address to a stranger willing to help.

Police rescued the African grey parrot two weeks ago from a neighbor’s roof in the city of Nagareyama, near Tokyo. After spending a night at the station, he was transferred to a nearby veterinary hospital while police searched for clues, local policeman Shinjiro Uemura said.

I imagine, while being kept at the police station, the parrot was banging his cage with a tin cup yelling, “Let me out you dirty screws!” Read more

Power to the People

What Sign?I’ve always known that mice can’t read, but this story makes me wonder whether the same is true of cats.

A cat chasing a mouse in Tirana’s main power station caused a 72-hour blackout across parts of the Albanian capital, the electricity company said on Friday (local time).

“A cat and a mouse ran into the high-voltage cables,” a company spokeswoman said, showing pictures of the electrocuted animals.

What part of the DANGER - High Voltage sign did Mittens not understand? Apparently, all of it. Read more

Taking The Fifth

Where’s My LawyerSo, just as I got done with the other donkey story I find yet another one. Consider this a special Two for Tuesday burro special. So what is it that makes donkeys the target of a litigious society? If it’s in Dallas, Tx, then it’s all about the noise.

The star witness paced outside the courthouse Wednesday, breathing hard, his head down, an American flag bandanna around his neck.

Buddy the donkey, led by Etienne Grimmett, walked ahead of owner Gregory Shamoun on the way to court Wednesday.

He said nothing to the media swarming around him. He just twitched his huge ears and swatted flies with his tail.

People had accused him of all sorts of things: He was loud. He was aggressive.

He smelled bad, too.

It saddens me to think about the state of reporting in this country. Sure the first four sentences report the scene, but was that last sentence, questioning Buddy’s hygiene, really necessary? Read more

Pinning It On The Donkey

I Think I’ve Had Too MuchYou know, I love vacationing in Cancun and I thought it loved me. However, if I look at the situation south of America’s border I’ve come to realize animals are second rate citizens. Just read the following story for evidence that even in the 21st century humans still control our destiny. Sure it’s about a donkey but similar incidents have occurred with canines as well.

TUXTLA GUTIERREZ, Mexico - A donkey is doing time in southern Mexico for assault and battery.

The animal was locked up at a local jail that normally holds people for public drunkenness and other disturbances after it bit and kicked two men near a ranch in Chiapas state, police said Monday.

No word on a) whether the burrow was intoxicated and b) if there was retribution for the rather large dump he took, clogging the john. Read more

I love dogs that help humanity live a better life. I’m just not sure which dog in this video is helping more. I’ll let you decide.
