Polly Want a Heimlich?

No, I’m not talking about a hero as in a sandwich, sub or grinder. Well, I wasn’t anyway.
But now that I mention it, I could go for a nice roast beef sub with thousand island dressing on whole wheat bread. While I’m at it, I’ll take some liver flavored potato chips along with a beef shake to wash it down.
Where was I? Oh…a hero in our midst. Turns out you don’t need to be a dog to save human lives.
Check out the heroic efforts performed by a bird in the mile high city. Yeah, a bird.
Gov. Bill Ritter and Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper joined the Red Cross in honoring Colorado’s heroes on Friday.
The Mile High’s Chapter’s “Breakfast of Champions” honors people who have saved lives using Red Cross skills.
The Animal Lifesaver Award went to Willie the parrot. Red Cross spokesperson Jim Rettew says it’s unusual to honor a bird but he says if you hear the story, it’s a great one.
CBS4 first brought you Willie’s story back in November. Willie and his owner Megan Howard were babysitting a toddler named Hannah.
Megan went into the bathroom and moments later heard Willie screaming, “Mama, Baby” over and over.
She ran out and saw that Hanna was turning blue. She was choking on her breakfast.
“He (Willie) is the real hero,” said Megan.
Now, if you’d just put Willie in between two slices rye bread, I’ll be on my way.
